Regional Director – Internal Audit – Nairobi – Aga Khan University

Introduction: Aga Khan University (AKU) was established in 1983 as an international university with an objective to promote human welfare in general, and the welfare of the people in the countries in which it operates, by disseminating knowledge and providing instruction, training, research and service in the health sciences, education and such other branches of learning as the University may determine.

As an international institution, the University has 11 campuses and teaching sites spread over 8 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Responsibilities
The Regional Director will be in charge of internal audit operations of AKU entities in East Africa. These include Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi both on and off-campus, Post-Graduate and Under-Graduate Medical Examinations, Advanced Nursing Studies, Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Graduate School of Media & Communications and Institute for Educational Development.

The main responsibilities include strategy formulation and planning, interacting with senior management and the Chief Internal Auditor (CIA), supervising staff and ensuring that the annual risk based audit plan is professionally executed.

Regional Director ensures that internal audit carries out independent assessment of the internal control systems, review adequacy, effectiveness and adherence to policies and procedures and assesses the approach to risk management.

Specifically s/he will be responsible to:
develop, communicate and implement internal audit policy / charter, audit processes and methodology
present Internal Audit Department (IAD) East Africa audit updates to Internal Audit Review Committee (IARC) and Audit Committee through the CIA
strengthen internal audit function in East Africa, determine the needs of the internal audit department, propose requisite staff and guide staff in audit assignments
provide leadership and mentoring of staff in work, career and skills development
review performance of staff on a regular basis to ensure their work is professionally tenable
maintain close liaison between internal audit department in East Africa and the Chief Internal Auditor in Pakistan
execute annual audit plan and ensure audit assignments are completed in time and are carried out in line with AKU methodology and professional standards
keep CIA and IARC updated on IAD operations in East Africa.

Requirements
Candidates should have:
Chartered Accountant or MBA in Finance or any other professional accountancy certificate with 10 years of post-qualification experience, of which five years should be at managerial level
additional professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor or Certified Information Systems Auditor is also desirable
strong investigative and project management skills
excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively with all levels of employees
ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality and to work with a high degree of integrity
excellent negotiation, analytical and problem solving skills.
