Training of Teachers on Child Centered Methodologies – Windle Trust Kenya

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Windle Trust Kenya (WTK), a member of Windle Trust International is a Non-Profit Organization with a mission to transform Society through education and training. WTK in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is implementing the ‘Return Out-of-School Children to School’ (ROCS) Programme in Turkana and Garissa Counties. The ROCS Programme is working with teachers and the existing school management structures towards generating understanding and support for the enrollment of out-of-school children in target schools in Dadaab, Turkana North and Turkana West sub counties.

A child’s success in school is enabled by having parents and a community that encourages his/her education. The challenge in education is not simply to get children into school, but also to improve the overall quality of schooling and retention through child friendly schools. Child-friendly schools encourage the use of different teaching and learning methods appropriate for the children.
The teachers’ training consultant will provide targeted training to 204 teachers drawn from 51 schools located in Turkana North, Turkana West and Dadaab Sub Counties. This training will support the teachers to effectively acquire skills/methods of promoting child friendly schools in a bid to returning and retaining out-of-school children to school and promoting child–centered learning in their respective catchment areas.

SCOPE
The Specific objectives of the training include:

To train teachers in identifying and using child centered approach best practices in teaching
To train teachers on their role in helping provide guidance and order within the class while allowing a child to explore his/her own potential
To train teachers in constructive discipline practices to promote orderly and fair conditions for learning in classrooms and learning spaces
Train teachers to prepare learner-friendly lessons with thematic approaches for more holistic learning to improve learning outcomes

DELIVERABLES
To develop a training manual for training teachers on Child Centered Methodologies/Child Friendly Schools
To undertake training of teachers drawn from ROCS schools in Turkana North, Turkana West and Dadaab Sub Counties
To develop a detailed training report with recommendations and a training evaluation feedback from the trainees

QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Governance or other relevant field; master’s degree or advanced qualification in a related area will be an added advantage
At least 5 years of experience in CCM/CFS initiative, its implementation and scaling up.
Working experience and familiarity with the development efforts of the international development partners, especially UN agencies and NGOs in training provision
Excellent research and writing skills
Knowledge of the local culture vis-à-vis child education
