High School Music Teaching Assistant – The International School of Kenya – Nairobi

Scope of Responsibilities:
ISK seeks an energetic, optimistic, creative person to serve as an Administrative Assistant, providing support to the Advancement Office. He or she will develop a commitment to ISK’s Mission & Vision and will be the first point of contact for visitors to the office and must represent the school in a friendly, welcoming and professional manner.

Overall Responsibilities:
Collaborate with colleagues.
Communicate regularly with the classroom teachers.
Attend relevant departmental, divisional and K-12 professional meetings as necessary.
Promote a positive learning environment.
Assume personal responsibility for meaningful professional growth as an educator and musician.
Perform other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the supervising Music Teacher or school administrator.

Specific Roles/Responsibilities:
Prepare the classroom for lessons – set up stands and chairs, arrange instruments, sanitize as needed between lessons.
Accompany ensembles, either on piano or other instrument as needed.
Lead small groups of students in the classroom and in sectional rehearsals, using techniques as modeled by the classroom teacher.
Support classroom logistics, which might include taking attendance and carrying out classroom-related errands as requested.
Organize instrument storage spaces, materials, bulletin boards, music stands and other displays.
Help with documentation, photocopying, filing, organizing music and other clerical duties.
Maintain an inventory of music resources including equipment and costumes; catalogue and maintain the music library.
Supervise students as determined by teachers and administration. Using conflict resolution strategies to assist students to resolve problems both in and out of the classroom. Reinforce social expectations for children by using appropriate language.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Qualities:
Diploma/Degree in Education or Music
Music Education/experience/certificate required
Minimum 2 years relevant teaching or classroom experience
Piano and sight reading proficiency for accompanying ensembles
Experience in piano performance and accompaniment
High level of musicianship on a brass or woodwind instrument
Good command of the English language, written and oral
Positive, helpful, efficient in whatever capacity is required to assist the Music Department teachers in creating enriching musical experiences for all students
Familiarity with the music curriculum
Professional and ethical approach to work

Bachelor’s Degree
Student-centered and nurturing personality
Ability to repair instruments would be an asset
Commitment to collaborative planning
Flexibility and creativity
Showing initiative and the ability to work independently
Use music notation software for transposition and transcription purposes.
Basic Math skills
